Competency 5: Explain the role of brain development in learning

Learning Objectives:

• Describe brain growth and functions
• Identify the impact of the environment, including the effects of toxic stress, on brain development
• Review optimal and critical periods of brain development
• Identify infant toddler abilities specific to cognitive developmental skills

Competency 6: Explain caregiving routines and environment as curriculum

Learning Objectives:

• Review individualized caregiving routines (i.e., diapering, feeding, napping)
• Identify strategies for planning for infants and toddlers
• Explain how learning occurs through routines and transitions
• Review state licensing regulations specific to infants and toddlers
• Complete a WI approved breastfeeding friendly child care training
• Describe cultural differences between home environments and caregiving settings
• Explore how to provide culturally sensitive care within caregiving routines

Competency 7: Analyze physical development of infants and toddlers

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the effect of prenatal conditions on development.
• Review the developmental progression of physical development.
• Identify ways to support gross and fine motor development.

Competency 8: Analyze language and communication development of infants and toddlers

Learning Objectives:

• Review early literacy experiences for infants and toddlers
• Identify ways to involve families in language and literacy development
• Review benefits of interactive reading
• Review the developmental progression of language development
