Bio
Laurie earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee with a focus on Ophthalmology and went on to work in the field of optometry for fifteen years before joining Milwaukee Area Technical College.
She began her teaching career at the college in January 1999 as a part-time instructor in the Opticianry Science program and transitioned to a full-time role in January 2001. Laurie served as program coordinator for the Opticianry Science program for seventeen years.
In 2018, Laurie became the program coordinator for the Healthcare Customer Service Certificate, later assuming the role of lead faculty in 2020. She also supports the Dual Enrollment department, serving as a liaison for high school students enrolled in Health 101, 104, and 107 courses. In this role, she mentors high school instructors teaching college-level health courses and contributed to the development of the Dual Enrollment Manual as a committee member.
Laurie has also played an important role in developing Open Educational Resources (OER). She was part of the team that created the Health 101 Medical Terminology OER, contributing to test bank development, recording the pronunciation segments for flashcards, and reviewing content for accuracy. Additionally, she contributed to the second edition of the Health 101 OER as a peer reviewer.
